How is it done in Word? Although I don't use Word for these documents, I'm curious to see how that pdfmark thing works.

Bingo! Get this -- I just added a wordspace after the title (I couldn't change the title itself, since the client was very specific about how it should read), and that did the trick.
Later, I ran into the same problem with another file (only this time it was the subject field, not the title field), and adding a wordspace there also fixed the problem.
A very strange quirk indeed, but I'm just glad the problem is solved.
