Sorry for leaving that out!
I'm using Quark 5 to prepare the document, and I'm printing through "Acrobat Distiller" and distilling it on the fly, directly creating the pdf, skipping the step of me creating a .ps file, then opening Distiller to then select that file and distilling it.
The output is for press. IN Quark I have the line screen specified to "Printer", and the DPI set to 2400. In my Distiller job options, I have it set to 2400dpi, and its compressing files larger than 450 to 300, using "Zip" and "8-bit" settings.
