maybe for reshaping the mask perpendicularly. if you click and hold/drag on the middle CV, it shortens the dimension of that side; as when you drag on a corner (one of your 4), all of the dimensions will change (even when constraining proportions). my guess is that the other 2 are there for ease of reshaping qudralaterals. are the additional 2 CV's causing you issues as is?
