In AE 5.5 and earlier we created 8-point rectangle masks so they would interpolate nicely into oval masks.
We changed this in 6.0 so now rectangle masks have 4 points. Easier to manipulate but don't transform as nicely into oval masks. You can use Smart Mask Interpolation if you need a nicer interpolation (or just add the extra points yourself).
