I assume you are talking specifically about codecs targeted at NTSC/PAL, right, Chris? There are plenty of QT codecs that look great on a computer monitor.
And yes, Jeff, AE always rerenders footage because even if your footage is the same size and framerate as the comp and is perfectly centered, it still has to go through AE render pipeline.
