Re: Codecs and Quality Loss - DV
To all of you:
While some codecs may look okay on a computer monitor, if it is for broadcast, an NTSC monitor is a must. DV looks like sh*t on computer monitors, and I made the assumption that whatever codec Josh is using may be in the same league with DV.
Anyway, I have two good monitors, both JVC, one is a really good viewing monitor TM-H1375SU 14" with 750 lines of resolution, new it cost less than $500 at B&H.
The other is a JVC TM-1650SU, a true production monitor with bule balance adjustment, essential for calabrating accurately. I think it retails for around $1300, but I got it from a reseller in Mesa for $800.
What I am able to do, however, to get both very close, is after I calibrate the 1650, I cover the screens of both displaying bars with a dark blue gel, and then I can tweak the heck out of the 1375.
I have done several jobs of late that would have been impossible to do without a good monitor, very critical balancing of black levels of different elements superimposed.
BTW I am in NTSC land, Phoenix, AZ.
