Here's a quick Photoshop recipe for a simple starfield.

* Create a new image half the size you want to end up with. You’re going to make it bigger later.
* Fill with Black
* Add monochromatic noise at about 25%
* Apply levels and adjust Black Input to about 120 (grab the slider on the far left and move it about to the middle)
* Resize your image 200% to 250% using bicubic interpolation (this makes your stars at least 2 pixels wide and reduces interlace flicker)
* Now make a finals levels call but this time set white input to about 150 to brighten up the stars

There you go... a nice star field in 30 seconds. Now make another set it on top of the first in AE, change the transfer mode to screen and scale one at a different rate than the other in AE and you’ve got moving stars...
Looks just like you would expect because it’s the way they have created starfields in many movies.
